Overview
Vtama is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the topical treatment of atopic dermatitis (the most common type of eczema) in adults and children 2 years of age and older. Vtama is also known by its drug name, tapinarof.

Tapinarof is an aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist, meaning it helps regulate inflammation and immune responses in the skin. Scientists believe it works by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which can help manage symptoms of eczema.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Vtama cream should be applied as a thin layer to the affected areas of the skin once daily. It is for topical use only and should not be used in the mouth, eyes, or vaginal area. The medication should be used exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Vtama cream lists common side effects including upper respiratory tract infection, folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles), lower respiratory tract infection, headache, asthma, vomiting, ear infection, pain in the extremities, and abdominal pain.
